Employee Training

What is employee training?

Employee training equips employees with the knowledge, skills and specific behaviours they need in their day-to-day work. In the context of brand management, its primary purpose is to help employees understand what a brand stands for and translate its aspirations into tangible behaviours.

After all, a new brand positioning or a refreshed visual identity alone will not ensure that a brand is actually brought to life differently within an organisation. Employees need to understand what their brand stands for and what values such as “respectful”, “collaborative” or “customer-focused” mean for their individual roles.

Why is employee training important for a brand?

Employees shape how a brand is perceived across numerous touchpoints – whether during a sales conversation, at a trade fair, over the phone or when handling a customer service enquiry. These are the moments that reveal whether a brand promise is merely communicated or genuinely lived.

Employee training helps establish a shared understanding of the brand. The aim is to translate abstract brand values into practical guidance so that employees know how to reflect them in their everyday behaviour.

Employee Training Brings the Brand to Life

Apple provides an example of what this can look like in practice within its retail operations. Apple Store employees receive basic store training as well as further training tailored to their specific roles. Apple describes the role of its retail teams as creating exceptional customer experiences and showing customers what they can achieve with its products. Training therefore supports precisely the kind of customer advice and service experience that the brand aims to deliver in its stores.

What does an employee training cover?

The content of an employee training depends on the target group, their responsibilities and the relevant touchpoints. Alongside product knowledge and specialist expertise, training may cover brand identity, the brand promise, communication standards or specific behavioural guidelines.

The key is to go beyond explaining the brand in theoretical terms. Instead, the central question is: What does the brand’s ambition mean for the way I behave in my role?

Which methods are suitable for employee training?

Employee training can take the form of workshops, role-playing exercises, webinars or train-the-trainer programmes. For customer-facing topics in particular, it is useful to draw on real situations from everyday working life and practise the desired behaviours in a practical setting.

Standards do not necessarily have to take the form of rigid scripts. Instead, they can provide a shared framework within which employees are empowered to act independently.

The Ritz-Carlton provides an example of this approach. New team members are introduced to the hotel brand’s so-called “Gold Standards”, which include its Credo and defined service values. These standards are designed to guide employees in delivering the brand’s commitment to exceptional service in their daily interactions with guests. In this way, the brand is conveyed not only through communication but also through clear expectations of employee behaviour.

When does employee training have a lasting impact?

A one-off training session can provide valuable inspiration and momentum. However, lasting behavioural change is most likely when the content is subsequently reinforced in everyday working life – for example, through coaching, feedback, regular reviews or follow-up training.

Over time, the brand’s ambition becomes an integral part of everyday behaviour. Employees not only understand what the brand stands for but are also able to bring that ambition to life at their respective touchpoints. Ideally, this enables them to become credible brand ambassadors themselves.
