Brand Wheel
What is the Brand Wheel?
The brand wheel is a strategic brand management tool used to systematically define a brand’s core attributes and value proposition. It helps companies develop a clear and consistent brand positioning and implement it uniformly across all communication channels.
The model visualizes a brand’s identity in the form of a wheel. It presents both the functional and emotional aspects of a brand in a structured way.
For businesses and marketers in particular, the Brand Wheel is a helpful tool for refining their brand strategy, streamlining internal coordination, and ensuring consistent brand communication.
Structure of the Brand Wheel
A classic brand wheel consists of five core components: At the center is brand core competence, that is, the core capability that a brand credibly delivers to its target audiences. Four additional dimensions are grouped around this center, describing how a brand presents itself and what benefits it offers: brand benefits, brand tone, brand attributes, and brand image.
A key challenge generally lies in the inherent subjectivity of the content. However, through deep market research, the actual perceptions and needs of the target group can be captured and reflected.
Other, more advanced models depict a brand’s positioning as a figure with the following aspects:
Brand core: The essence of the brand
Brand core describes its central value proposition. It answers the question of what a brand fundamentally stands for and what specific value it delivers to customers.
A clearly defined brand core is crucial for effective brand positioning, as it serves as a guiding principle for all strategic and communication decisions.
Brand Benefits: Real Added Value Through the Brand
Brand benefits describe the specific value that customers derive from the brand. These benefits can be functional and/or emotional. They are crucial for differentiating the brand from the competition and thus ensure customers choose the brand.
Brand Personality Traits and Character
Personality traits and character define a brand’s communication style. They determine how a brand speaks, presents itself, and interacts with its target group. These aspects are crucial for consistent brand communication and for creating an emotional connection with the brand.
